Battery Innovation For Smart Wearables

To make wearable devices as popular as smartphones and tablets, batteries must be smaller, last longer, and be thinner, lighter and more flexible. Samsung SDI exhibited new achievements at the 2015 InterBattery exhibition in Seoul. Samsung showed two new batteries. The 3mm-thin Stripe battery is a bendable battery. Samsung claims that its energy density is higher than other batteries on the market, mainly because it uses the smallest battery enclosure width. The two major features of ultra-thinness and bendability make Stripe very likely to enter more wearable devices, such as necklaces and clothes. Another battery is Band, which can be installed on the strap of a smart watch, making the battery power increase by 50% over the original device. During the test, Samsung bent the battery 50,000 times to see if it is durable. Samsung not only cares about its shape, but also pays attention to its function. The Band battery will enter the market in 2017, which may change the market landscape.
LG Chem also launched a new bendable smart watch battery, which has been developed since 2012. The battery can be installed in a device with a radius of 15 mm, which is half the size of the batteries currently on the market. With these batteries, the design of smart watches in the future will be more free.
